Online Creative Resources

Writer's picture: AishaAisha

Hello darlings!

I've been costuming and creating for many many many years, but sometimes I'm still surprised by online resources that I've never heard of before. I thought I'd share some of my findings today to hopefully give you some much needed inspiration (or simply a site to waste hours on while daydreaming about new projects to undertake).

1. Antique Pattern Library

Has a lot of resources, my favourites are the monogram stencils which come up if you do a keyword search and then scroll through the document.

2. Bracelet Book

Despite being created for friendship bracelets, it's also a good resource for cross stitchers or tapestry crocheters. Because of the young audience it has a lot of contemporary patterns and is a lot easier to search than Pinterest!

4. Hobbycraft

There's not a massive amount here, but if you want colouring sheets or seasonal crafts to do with kids, it's a fun place to scroll through!

5. Spruce & Linen

If you're into weaving, or want to get started, there's a load of free patterns here! Also, if you sign up to their mailing list or subscribe to their youtube they also release videos with tips & tricks, or new weaving patterns.

6. V&A

There are a wide variety of projects from knitting to sewing, advanced projects to things you can do with kids. A lovely place to glance through on a rainy day.

7. DMC

Yes, this is the thread website! But there are loads of step-by-step guides and video tutorials, mostly focused on getting started with new crafts, but there are also free patterns and lots to explore!

8. The Internet Archive

And finally, the internet archive is a collection of digitised resources that can all be accessed for free. I mainly use the books, and the historical ones, especially antique dressmaking and craft books. I've also found some more modern books there as well, which comes in handy with books that are out of print and hard to find.

Some of my favourites:

Crafts

Antique magazines

Dressmaking

Crochet (my latest obsession)

Do you know of any online resources that can be useful for crafters? If so, please let us know in the comments below!

Until next time,

Aisha x
